Seamless Hydraulic Steel Tube: Specs Explained

October 21, 2026

A seamless hydraulic steel tube is a cold-drawn steel tube with no weld seam, made to precision standards such as EN 10305-4, EN 10305-1, the older DIN 2391, or China’s GB/T 3639. For cylinder barrels, the spec that matters most is not the standard name but the delivery condition, ID allowance, and straightness the tube arrives with.

Most spec pages for this product are written by people who sell tube by the meter. This one is written from the other end of the process: the shop that receives the tube, cuts it, hones the bore, welds on caps and pressure-tests a finished cylinder. That changes which columns on a spec sheet deserve attention.

Which Standard Is Actually on Your Purchase Order?

Four standards show up on most seamless hydraulic tube quotes and mill test certificates (MTCs). A fifth, GB/T 8163, appears often enough in Chinese supply chains that it belongs in the table, mainly as a warning.

Standard Status What it covers Typical grades named Where you’ll see it
DIN 2391 Former German national standard, superseded by EN 10305-1 Cold-drawn seamless precision steel tubes, general purpose St35, St45, St52 Asian mill catalogs and MTCs, older drawings
EN 10305-1 Current European standard Seamless cold-drawn precision tubes, general purpose E215, E235, E355 European drawings; common reference for cylinder barrel stock
EN 10305-4:2016 Current European standard (replaced the 2011 edition) Seamless cold-drawn tubes for hydraulic and pneumatic power systems E235+N, E355+N most often listed Hydraulic line tube from European distributors
GB/T 3639 Current Chinese national standard Cold-drawn or cold-rolled precision seamless tubes 10, 20, 35, 45, Q355 Chinese mill MTCs for precision tube
GB/T 8163 Current Chinese national standard Seamless tubes for fluid transport, typically hot-finished 10, 20, Q355 Low-cost quotes; not a precision tolerance standard

A few points behind that table are worth spelling out.

The DIN designation has outlived the standard. According to Global Seamless, DIN 2391 remains in common use across the hydraulic tube market, especially in Asia, where many manufacturers still cite it in catalogs and MTCs even though EN 10305-1 replaced it. Seeing “DIN 2391” on a certificate is normal. It just tells you less than you might assume.

EN 10305-4 is the hydraulic-specific part. DIN Media lists EN 10305-4:2016 as the current edition, replacing the 2011 version, and its title limits it to seamless cold-drawn tubes for hydraulic and pneumatic power systems. The Estonian standards body EVS lists the 2016 edition against the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, which matters if the finished machine ships into the EU.

GB/T 8163 is the one to catch early. It is a legitimate standard, but it governs fluid-transport tube rather than precision cold-drawn tube. A quote that substitutes it for GB/T 3639 or EN 10305-1 will usually be cheaper for a reason.

Delivery Condition: The Column Most Buyers Skip

Two tubes with the same grade, OD and wall thickness can behave very differently in a cylinder shop because of how they were finished at the mill. EN 10305 and DIN 2391 use different codes for the same set of conditions.

EN 10305 code Old DIN 2391 code Mill condition What it means downstream
+C BK Cold-finished, hard (no heat treatment after final draw) Highest strength, lowest ductility. Poor choice where the tube will be bent or flared
+LC BKW Cold-finished, soft (light final pass) Some formability retained; still carries drawing stresses
+SR BKS Cold-finished and stress-relieved Common choice for cylinder barrels: good strength, more stable during honing and after welding
+A GBK Annealed Soft and easy to form; usually too low in strength for a barrel
+N NBK Normalized Uniform structure, good for bending and flaring; the condition most hydraulic line tube is sold in

Why does a cylinder maker care? Residual drawing stress in a +C tube can release unevenly when the bore is honed or skived, or when end caps are welded on, and the barrel can move slightly out of round or out of straight. Stress-relieved stock reduces that risk. It does not eliminate it, so a final bore check after welding is still standard practice.

Reading a Tube Spec From the Cylinder Side

When tube arrives for barrel production, the receiving inspection is driven by what the next machining steps need. Here is the sequence a cylinder shop works through, in roughly the order problems would surface.

1.Check the ID against the finished bore plus machining allowance. The tube’s nominal ID is not the cylinder bore. Honing, or skiving and roller burnishing, removes material, so the as-drawn ID must sit below the finished bore by enough to clean up the whole surface but not so much that cycle time balloons. Agree this allowance with the supplier in writing.

2.Measure wall eccentricity, not just average wall thickness. A tube can pass a wall-thickness tolerance on average while one side is noticeably thinner. After honing, the thin side sets the real pressure limit.

3.Confirm straightness over the cut length. Long-stroke barrels magnify any bow. Honing will follow a bent tube rather than correct it.

4.Look at the inner surface before machining. Seams, laps and deep scratches that survive honing become seal-wear points or leak paths. Landefeld, for instance, states that its EN 10305-4 tubes all undergo eddy current or ultrasonic testing; ask whether your supplier’s tube had any non-destructive testing and to which method.

5.Match the delivery condition to the welding plan. If caps or ports are welded to the barrel, the condition (and carbon content of the grade) affects weld cracking risk and post-weld distortion.

6.Read the MTC line by line. The standard named, the grade, the delivery condition, the heat number and the test results should all be present and should agree with the PO.
Step 6 sounds administrative, but it catches the most expensive mistakes. Global Seamless points out that a tube certified only to DIN 2391 may meet dimensional and mechanical requirements without the extra hydraulic verification that EN 10305-4 includes, so the standard on the certificate needs to match the standard on the order.

Two Misconceptions That Cause Wrong Orders

“EN 10305-4 on the certificate means it’s cylinder barrel tube.” EN 10305-4 is written for hydraulic and pneumatic power systems, meaning lines and connecting tube. The 2011 edition’s published scope, as listed on the ANSI webstore, covers tubes up to a specified outside diameter of 80 mm. Many cylinder barrels are larger than that, and barrel stock is more commonly ordered to EN 10305-1, DIN 2391 or GB/T 3639 in a stress-relieved condition, with a defined honing allowance. If a supplier offers “EN 10305-4 cylinder tube” in a large bore, ask which clauses actually apply.

“DIN 2391 and EN 10305-4 are the same thing.” They are related, not interchangeable. DIN 2391 maps to EN 10305-1, the general precision tube part. EN 10305-4 adds hydraulic-specific requirements. A buyer who treats the two as equal can end up with tube that is dimensionally fine but was never tested to the hydraulic part.

Buying Tube Alone vs Buying It Through the Cylinder Maker

Compared with sourcing tube from a stockist’s standard-length list, sourcing through a manufacturer that also hones and assembles cylinders shifts where the responsibility sits. Neither route is right for every buyer.

Factor Tube from a stockist Tube supplied with or by a cylinder manufacturer
Lead time for standard sizes Often immediate from stock Depends on project scope
Who specifies honing allowance and condition You do Can be set by the team that will machine it
Accountability if the barrel distorts after welding Split between mill and your shop Sits with one supplier for the finished part
Published size tables and pressure figures Usually available online May not be published; must be quoted per project
El más adecuado Line tube, repair stock, in-house cylinder shops Custom cylinders and complete hydraulic systems

The trade-off is real. A stockist gives you transparency and speed for standard line tube. A cylinder manufacturer can give you a single point of responsibility for the barrel, but you will usually need an RFQ cycle to get numbers that a stockist publishes openly.

Baishicheng Seamless Hydraulic Steel Tubes: What Is Published and What Isn’t

Baishicheng lists tubos de acero hidráulicos sin costura as a product line alongside its hydraulic cylinders and systems. The table below separates what the company has published from what you will need to confirm.

Parámetro Status
Construction Seamless steel tubing manufactured without welded joints
Intended use Hydraulic cylinders and related industrial hydraulic applications
OD, ID, wall thickness, length Not publicly listed; application-specific, confirm per RFQ
Steel grade and delivery condition Not publicly listed; confirm per RFQ
Presión nominal Not publicly listed for tube; cylinder rating is set by the finished design
Standard referenced on MTC Not publicly listed; specify the standard you require on the PO
Downstream processes in-house Cylinder honing, hydraulic manifold machining, system assembly, PLC panel integration, full-pressure/full-flow testing of systems and power units, pre-shipment commissioning
Factory witness testing Available
Precio Quoted per project; no public price list

The useful part for a cylinder buyer is the downstream column. Because honing and assembly happen at the same Qingdao facility, tube condition and machining allowance can be decided by the people who will machine the barrel. Baishicheng also holds a Chinese utility model patent for a hydraulic cylinder barrel cleaning device (Patent No. ZL 2022 2 0810223.4, granted August 2, 2022 by the China National Intellectual Property Administration). That is registered technical IP related to barrel processing, not a product certification.

If your project needs tube certified to a specific standard with a particular inspection document type, state that in the RFQ and get written confirmation before ordering.

What to Put in an RFQ for Cylinder Tube

A complete request saves at least one round of clarification:

  • Standard and edition (for example EN 10305-1, GB/T 3639, or DIN 2391 if your drawing still uses it)
  • Steel grade
  • Delivery condition (+SR, +N, etc.)
  • OD, ID and wall thickness with the tolerances you need
  • Finished bore size and the machining route (honing or skiving/roller burnishing), so allowance can be agreed
  • Cut length or stock length, and straightness requirement
  • Inspection and certification documents required
  • Whether you need tube only, honed tube, or a finished cylinder

Preguntas frecuentes

Q: What is the difference between seamless and welded hydraulic tube?

R: Seamless tube is drawn from a solid billet and has no longitudinal weld, while welded tube is formed from strip and joined along its length. For pressurized cylinder barrels, seamless tube removes the weld zone as a potential weak line and gives more uniform material around the circumference.

Q: Is DIN 2391 still valid?

A: DIN 2391 has been superseded by EN 10305-1, but it is still widely printed on catalogs and MTCs, particularly from Asian mills. It is acceptable to see it, as long as the grade, delivery condition and test results on the certificate match what your order requires.

Q: Which delivery condition should I order for cylinder barrels?

A: Stress-relieved (+SR, formerly BKS) is the condition most often chosen for barrels that will be honed and welded. It balances strength with dimensional stability during machining. Confirm with whoever machines and welds the barrel, because the right choice depends on grade and welding method.

Q: Can I use a distributor’s pressure table to rate my cylinder?

A: No, a distributor’s table rates the straight tube under a specific calculation method, not a finished cylinder. Cylinder pressure ratings depend on honed wall thickness, welds, ports, cap design and duty cycle, and must be engineered for the design.

Q: Does Baishicheng publish standard sizes for its seamless hydraulic tubes?

A: No, Baishicheng has not published a standard size, grade or pressure range for its seamless tubes. Dimensions and requirements are handled per project, so send your specification for a quote.
